The laptop has enough power, memory and storage for school work and for general purposes. Personally I would find the 10" screen a bit confining. You can find entry level 14 or 15 inch laptops for about the same price but HP does not appear to have one right now. The Home and Student Office is either included or is $20 off. I am having a hard time figuring that out but she will need Office software. You can buy Office 2013 or you can rent Office 365 for $10 per month and that includes 5 users so the whole family could have it at that price.
