More info:
While the laptop was on, I was able to update to current firmware. I feel I need to add that when the laptop is powered off and is refusing to power on nothing starts; IE: the fan does not attempt to start, I can not hear the hard drive start to spin, and the only light that comes on is the battery indicator light.
