With the display screen flickering, I would suggest that you follow the steps in the document 'Resolving Video Graphics Issues'. Now with the display completely black, when it is plugged in. I would suggest the following troubleshooting steps 'Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot'.
Please let me know the outcome of the troubleshooting steps. :)
