After surfing around, I found the download for the PC Doctor Hardware Diagnostic Tools ... dutifully installed it, and attempted to run it ... only to get the fatal "not licensed for this computer" error.
In question is a 2007 dv6000t laptop. A couple of years ago, I had to replace the hard disk. The original disk was 120GB; nobody was selling anything near that small, so I put in a 320GB disk. THEN found that the restore CDs I had dutifully burned would not reload the OS (grrrrrrrrrrr). I got tired of running around in support circles, and installed Win7 from Microsoft (which is sooooo much better than Vista anyway). There is no diagnostic partition. F2 BIOS only has a memory test.
Being leery of burning a newer BIOS version, I tried the PC Doctor install. But some identifier must have been lost when I installed Win7.
Is there any way of adding the identifier?
If not, it would be really nice if the HP download site had a few caveats on it to save others from wasting their time ... like "only works with HP-installed OS", and maybe a list of models that it works with.
(BTW, the reason why I wanted the diags was for the laptop touchpad (Synaptic), which has gone bonkers. I have ordered a new top cover from a 3rd party reseller, which will hopefully fix the problem.)
Thanks in advance,
