The SoftPaqs are stored in the \SWsetup folder. Once installed you don't need to keep the files there unless you need to re-install for some reason. You might want to store the contents to some offline storage if you fear that you would need to do a re-install without network connectivity. Usually you can get connected enough to redownload though.

You can use a very nice free utility to see which folders and subfolders and files are hogging your precious disk space. The utility is called WinDirStat and can be downloaded from here:

https://windirstat.net/

Be very careful not to delete anything that you are not sure about.

With the Microsoft Disk Clean-up utility (type the name in the Windows/Cortana search) you can usually gain quite a bit of free space if you are happy how your computer is currently operating. It lets you remove the installation files for already installed updates and also to remove older system restore points etc.  There is no turning back, so again, be sure that you are happy with the current operation of the machine before you commit.

As to the battery utilization, Windows 10 already comes with some tools to help you. In Settings->System->Battery you can see which apps are using your battery and also excert some control (click on the app).

As an easy  option you could turn up the battery saver to activate at a very high battery percentage and see if you can get your vital backround apps like Email still perform ok and how much time you would gain by that. maneuver.

If you know what you are doing you can control the stuff that windows loads at startup with the Task Manager app and the scheduling of background apps with the Task Scheduler app or more easily with some third party app like CCleaner byt Piriform.

Ouch! So the computer is a refurbished one? Not very well done, I'd say..

You said that you did all tests. Did it include trying to start up with the battery removed, with just AC power?

And also did you try a hard reset by removing the battery and unplugging the charger and after that pressing the power button for at least 15 secs and then plugging in the just the charger and trying to start.

If none of that helped,  I would take the computer with me to a store and kindly ask to borrow a charger for a minute to see if it would help.

If not, in an easy case it could be a loose cable connection inside the computer that someone with electro mechanical aptitude could fix. Some recycled  parts are also available on Ebay if needed.

Thank for sharing this information Andreas. I have wondered why after a restart the problem never occurs but after a cold boot very often. Here you find the details about the differences:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-turn-off-fast-startup-windows-10-a.html

I really cant understand why Microsoft  activates such a useless feature per default in the era of ssd, where the time difference between fast start and cold boot is marginal. Now I can life much better with this bug because I´m not a big fan of sleep mode or hibernation anyhow.

What I found out is that the energypower report, which can be done  via powershell "powercfg.exe -energy" throws up the following error:

"PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer. Platform Power Management CapabilitiesSmiley TongueCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled."

Perhaps this could have to do with this bug. Does anyone else get the same report? Any idea what could cause this?

@MattPro: With "Fast Start" enabled, Windows is saving the state of the Windows Kernel to harddisk. When you to a reboot, it initializes the kernel without using any saved information. With "Fast Start" disabled, the kernel is initialized on every boot. This is why, a reboot and a boot with "Fast Start" disabled, behaves the same way.

But by the way. Does anybody has the latest Windows 10 Insider Build installed? Maybe you can check if the bug still appears. Or if it's really related to some specific driver.

Thanks

I am not certain that HP Support Assistant will check for the installation of these Management Utilities.

I suggest that if you utilize any of the tools listed below that you read the Customer Advisory, follow the links and download the latest releases of these tools.

HP Image Assistant (HPIA)

HP Software Download Manager (HP SDM)

HP Management Integration Kit (HP MIK)

As i mentioned in my previous post, the update to the HP FTP site requires that new versions of these tools be downloaded and used so that you will not encounter any problems if you attempt to use the older versions of the tools.

Life Is Good  but for errors in Event Viewer; would like to determine the cause and decide what to do.  Here are screen snippets of the errors in EV on my HP Elitebook 8460p running Win 7 Pro 64-bit.  What should I do?

HP is very cautionary about replacing the WLAN module.

CAUTION: To prevent an unresponsive system, replace the wireless module only with a wireless module authorized for use in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wireless devices in your country or region. If you replace the module and then receive a warning message, remove the module to restore device functionality, and then contact technical support.

Setting Allow Bluetooth Devices to connect to this computer  can not be set  Woman Mad

Here is a snippet that shows the Bluetooth Setting I am trying to change.  I want to Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer,  When I click the option an hour glass arrow goes arround, and around, and around and finally fails to change the setting.

According to Device Manager the latest driver is installed.  What should I do to allow Blueooth devices to find this computer?

Still don't see it with Firefox, Egde or Chrome, but does not matter, your explanation is good enough.

I don't know in what kind of network environment you are. Years back I remember having had some issues when people had configured their own DHCP server or had misconfigured Remote Access Services.

In a home environment it could be if you are using connection sharing and there is a configuration issue. AFAIK in that environment the sharing and using computer should both be on DHCP, not static IPs and neither should be your DHCP server.

If you can explain your setup a bit it might take us closer to the resolution.

Confirm. I have the same warning (Platform Power Management CapabilitiesSmiley TongueCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled) in my powercfg report.

I disabled Fast boot too, but problem still exists!. After waking up, process System (ACPI.sys) highly utilizes CPU. I still didn't received any response from HP support where I opened the ticket :-(. Unbelievable!

How to simplify WiFi connection for ThinPro users?

Is there a way to make the WiFi connection dialogue in ThinPro simpler for the end user?

Right now when connecting to a hotspot/AP for the first time the end user has to manually go to the security tab, select something appropriate, then the passphrase (if applicable).

We'd rather it work more like what they are used to on their Windows laptops, phones, etc where it either just connects to the selected SSID (open/public) or prompts them for the passphrase (if locked).

Where did you switch off "fast-startup"? In windows setting or in bios? Did you follow the instructions from the link in my last posting?

It only helps after "coldstart". At "restart" the bug has never appeared from the beginning.

The problem still exists after "sleep" and "hibernation".  Thats the challenge now for the experts and I´m hoping very much that someone is working on this, otherwise it was my first and last HP invest Smiley Wink

OK - you are right, "coldstart" (with fast boot off) is fine now just like "restart". Problem still exists in sleep-wakeup. Every workday, every business meeting etc., I have to start from scratch Smiley Frustrated
